I almost can’t believe that this is my job now. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to photograph food and food stories, for boutique food companies and national brands, restaurants and resorts, chefs and purveyors, farmers and wine makers. I'm most interested in storytelling, in the intersection between people and place and food.
I worked as a sushi chef for over a decade before I traded my knife for a camera. When I’m not photographing food, I’m cooking at home, or traveling for it. I'm a sucker for chorizo tacos, and if brownie-a-la-mode is on a menu, I'm bound by a personal code to order it. My girlfriend calls me a “light dork”, because wherever I find myself, I’m distracted by it and turning over where to find it again or how to recreate it.
As a sushi chef, I became comfortable being publicly under pressure with packed tables, a full bar and a line out the door, or when the restaurant was slow, I was often the entertainment in an intimate setting. I learned how to read a room, to work with and in front of, a wide variety of people and personalities. It was a wild ride. No night was ever the same and I came to truly value grace under pressure, communication, flexibility and teamwork.
These days, I hope that I’m able to bring some of my dorky love of food and my past experiences with me on set, to see some shots others might miss, to communicate a bit easier with the talented people making it, be they stylists or chefs, and to keep cool if something didn’t quite go according to plan, coming up with an even better way to execute.
I do like to eat along the way.
